How Calorie Clock Calculates Your Burn
The Problem with Relying Only on Wearables
Smartwatches and fitness trackers are incredible tools for logging workouts and tracking steps. But let's be honest: you probably don't wear your device 24/7. You take it off to charge, to shower, or maybe you just prefer a classic watch on a night out.
If an app relies solely on data from your wearable, your metabolic tracking stops the moment you take it off. You end up with massive gaps in your data, making your daily calorie estimates inaccurate.
At Calorie Clock, we knew we needed a smarter approach. We built a system that ensures your metabolic dashboard is always running, beautifully and accurately, regardless of what's on your wrist.
The Foundation: Your Personal Metabolic Profile
When you set up Calorie Clock, we don't just ask for your height and weight. We calculate a precise baseline for your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)—the energy your body requires simply to exist.
This baseline acts as the foundation of our algorithm. Instead of waiting for a wearable to tell us you are burning calories, Calorie Clock intelligently predicts your background burn based on your unique profile.
Dynamic Adjustments: Sleep vs. Wake Time
Your body doesn't burn calories at a flat rate all day. To make our offline estimates as accurate as possible, Calorie Clock automatically adjusts your burn rate based on your daily schedule:
- Sleep Time: When you are asleep, your metabolic rate drops. The app seamlessly downshifts your calorie burn on the dial during your normal sleeping hours, reflecting the natural resting state of your body.
- Wake Time: As soon as your day begins, the dial speeds up. We factor in your baseline activity level to estimate the calories burned during a normal, non-exercise day (like commuting, working at a desk, or running errands).
This means that even if your smartwatch is sitting on the charger all weekend, your Calorie Clock dial continues to move at a biologically accurate pace.
The Magic of the Dial
All of this complex math is translated into one simple, continuous visual: the dial.
When you open the app, you aren't just looking at a static number. You are watching your metabolism happen in real time. The dial continuously updates to reflect your projected burn, giving you instant context on where your calorie balance stands right now.
Seamless Syncing
What happens when you finally put your wearable back on?
The moment you sync a workout or a burst of activity via Health Connect or Apple Health, Calorie Clock instantly reconciles the data. It overlays your active workout calories on top of your baseline profile, dynamically syncing the dial to ensure your balance is perfectly accurate.
You get the best of both worlds: the pinpoint accuracy of wearable data when you have it, and a smart, continuous metabolic engine when you don't.
Your metabolism never stops, and neither does your Calorie Clock.
